43-Bridges To the Florida Keys-The Official Keys Historical Guide Book

American Press Travel News-May 23rd,-excerpt from “43-Bridges to the Florida Keys”-Bob and Barb-Authors: The easy guides to your motoring whereabouts in the Keys are “mile markers”. Starting at Mile Market 124 (MM124) at the beginning of the 18-mile stretch into the Keys, to Mile Market 0 (MM 0) at the Southernmost Point of the United States in Key West. These are small green markers at roadside mark each mile into our island paradise.

Many early settlers of the Keys came from the Bahamas, where the Queen Conch, (a large marine snail), is a staple food. For this reason, their descendants are often called “conchs”. The “h” is silent and the word pronounced as if it were spelled “conk”

Spanish names are amongst the oldest on the continent. The Spanish name for our islands was “Cayos de los Martires”, Islands of the Martyrs. Cay, pronounced “key” is the Spanish word for island and accounts for the American name, the Florida Keys.

The Keys are part of Monroe County and the Everglades’ National Park takes in almost all of the mainland area of Monroe County as well as most of Florida Bay. The southeastern boundary line is the Intercoastal Waterway, only about a mile or so from U.S. 1, the Overseas Highway.

The Park area is about one and a half million acres, most of which are wetlands consisting of either fresh or brackish water flowing through the saw grass. The Park was established to basically protect and preserve wildlife and the integrity of these major wetland areas. Here is where the wet and wild contains a plethora of wildlife—a hundred different bird species, alligators, panthers, deer and even the saltwater crocodile which is highly protected as an endangered species.

Other National and State Parks in the Keys are John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and The Federal Marine Sanctuary on Key Largo at MM 102.5, Long Key State Recreation Area at MM 65 and Bahia Honda State Park MM 36. In all of the parks, the emphasis is on water related recreation. There are fees for all parks. Camping space may be reserved. Pets are not permitted overnight.

The jewels of the Keys are the reefs. The only living natural coral reefs on this continent, but they are not the only treasures found off the shores of the Keys. Gold, silver and precious gems also litter the sea floor, from the holds of Spanish treasure galleons caught in hurricanes a century and more ago. At Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum in Key West, you can touch gold bars, see jewelry once worn by Spanish aristocrats and learn how it was all found and recovered from beneath the sea. New Smyrna Beach – Night Swan Bed and Breakfast

P1040032AMERICAN PRESS TRAVELNEWS, Bob, Barb & Terry, “On the Road Again” and “Stopping to Smell the Roses” this time in New Smyrna Beach, FL. When we popped off I-95, heading for New Smyrna Beach, that the National Geographic Magazine folks voted as “the Worlds Top Surf Towns” and Dr. Beach rated New Smyrna  as “Florida’s Top 10-Beach Towns” ,we knew that we’d be on the Intracoastal Waterway with dolphins feeding and playing, just about 200 feet away from our lagoon view window. We weren’t wrong! We enjoyed the frolicking marine mammals seen from our Manatee Viewing Suite, at the Night Swan Bed and Breakfast, before heading to the beach, after lunch with Terry at the Dolphin View Seafood Restaurant. Night Swan Owners, Matt and Betsy Baker, bought the business in 2013 and lovingly placed their experience and tastes in all upgrades, and you will see this in everything about the B&B, that consists of twin vintage, but thoroughly updated houses, 16 room, with 6 rooms dedicated to be dog friendly and a dog friendly cottage too! On a historical note; “Smyrna” comes from the word purported to be Myrrh, one of the special fragrances brought to the manger by one of the 3-wise men during the time of Jesus’s birth! There are other thoughts on the name, but from a historical prospective we are offering this theory! The other side of the B&B besides the bed, you also get the breakfast. We enjoyed the fruit, blueberries and seasonal strawberries.  The scones, and the really great waffle, with real maple syrup and sausages. The coffee, tasted like coffee! Its not every place you go that you run into the real thing, “baby.” So many times, at too many other locations I have had dishwater called coffee, not at the Night Swan, it was real and good! There was all Breyers ice creams, cookies and drinks anytime you were in the mood for a snack, and we met some fine folks visiting from all parts of the east coast! The one thing that stands out for a great B&B is that the personalities and conviviality you find at a high quality B&B, is found no where else in the accommodations business, with the exception of cruising the oceans of the world!  Some of the items and amenities found at the Night Swan:  no charge boat dock, flat screen TV’s, private baths, elevated dock (we even watched a NASA launch from it on our last day at the B&B) lovely front porch, free WiFi, all kinds of meeting space for up to 40, great family reunion location, and wedding receptions in the great outdoors and so much, much more! You can come by boat, auto or any way you wish to this B&B—-Go: www.nightswan.com or call 386-423-4940 Check out the myriad of events you can attend weekly, for months in New Smyrna Beach and surrounding enclaves by going: www.nsbfla.com

Stay tuned 3 more posts coming at you from Smyrna Beach, trips, restaurants and a nature boat excursion as well.

APtravelnews-April 6th,-Port Charlotte, FL. Bob and Barb “Stopping to Smell The Roses.” After hurricane Charlie devastated Punta Gorda, Gasparilla and Port Charlotte area to name a few, locals and snow birds alike chipped right in with “good heart” labor and dollars, to begin the process of recuperating their beloved area. The Spirit of Punta Gorda Sundial was summarily installed to commemorate, and in remembrance of what Hurricane Charley wreaked on this area of S.W. Florida. Artist Peggy McTeague planned the sculpture for installation at the edge of Charlotte Harbor leading into the Peace River in Laishley Park. The park is dog-friendly and parents and their children friendly, as well! Go: www.charlotteharbortravel.com for a wealth of information on how you too can visit and enjoy this special place in Florida!
