Small Mouth Bass As Exciting as Any Freshwater Game Fish

Our Guide Scott Callen with a 6-pound smallie.

AmericanPressTravelNews-July 4th, Goose Holler’ Farm/Ranch-Bob & Barb are Back from our amazing trip to Lake Chautauqua, and Lake Erie area of New York State. We enjoyed our week in the “Empire State” especially due to the fact there was water, water everywhere (try standing on the shore of Lake Erie without wonderment in your being) and I most enjoy giving priority to places that have water features, as my hot passion for fishing has been hot since my grandfather David Schwartz showed me the way of the “fin.”   When Dave Barus set a fishing trip on Lake Erie out of Dunkirk Launch, Dave Barus, also an outdoors writer of some fine repute, from ” Share the Outdoors, and Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau ( www.tourchautauqua.com) with our guide Scott Callen and his new 22-foot bass boat.

Pulling the boat after a great morning of smallmouth bass action.

I knew my rod would bend, and my joy and excitement level would also rise. It was a blustery day, and we had to continually move back over the waters, where a huge gaggle of smallmouth bass were coming off the beds as we drifted and cast our guides rubber/plastic minnow creations in blues, greens, yellows and whites. The smallies loved em! When a small mouth bass hits its usually more of s slam-bang affair than a sip and move off, as with largemouth bass, most times. These bass jump, pull down and really put up a strong battle. Smallmouth live in colder waters than its cousin the largemouth and I believe they are more active and less lethargic than the warmer water largemouths.  For more information about all things Chautauqua County go: www.tourchautauqua.com You may also go: Facebook.com/Tour.Chautauqua

Yours truly with a large smallmouth that pulled the rod tip under more than a few times. All our fish were captured and released from a special rubberized net that does not damage the fish’s scales and slime.

Backyard Thanksgiving Fun With the Neighbors!

My favorite lures! Al's Goldfish and their new Living Lures are hooking and holding our backyard neighbors.

APtravelnews- Bob & Barb “Stopping to Smell The Roses” in our backyard images–November 26th, Port St Lucie, FL-OK! I know, goofy about fishing and all things involved in fooling the finicky and the foolhardy gluttons too! I know Largemouth are touted as being finicky feeders, yet i found a lure group that slays them (I carefully release all top predators, bass are in that category) with ease.  Just 15-feet from our screen door lanai, down a slightly sloping grass backyard, lies a very large rain holding pond. This 10-acre pond is interconnected with several additional ponds in our private, HOA (hate HOA, except the ponds are protected from unabated, indiscriminate catch and take use) neighborhood.  When I want to check out anything I offer it to my dozens of backyard neighbors; Largemouth, giant brim, and the invasive, but fun loving Peacock bass. Of all the many hard and soft lures I’ve tried and had fine success with, nothing has been more consistent in having a neighbor visit their side of the pond mud and weed than by them accepting the invitation I offer with AL’s Goldfish Co. lures. We will also be testing these lures in the Keys with our son and daughter Brian and Diane on our Mako. Stay tuned to see if our old neighbors when we lived in the Keys will come to visit again!   For a good look at AL’s Goldfish Co. go: www.alsgoldfish.com

Barb loves to fish when she has an edge and doesn't have the whole day to hopefully hook a neighbor with shoulders enough for us to spar with! She has become an Al's lover too!

Chasing Trophy Fish Offers Incredible Fishing Lures To Go Chase em’ and Catch em’

Chasing Trophy Fish lures would be "what's for dinner" if I was a predator. They actually look real and better in many cases than the real thing with fins and smell!

APtravelnews- August 2nd, Goose Holler’ Farm– Product Reviews–When I met Vaughn Holderman (owner of CTF Lures) at ICAST, in Orlando, FL., I knew from his passion about his excellent products and his obvious love and knowledge at such an early age, that this lure company was special! He mirrored many generations of would be anglers who grew up marveling and loving their tender-years experience down at pond, lake, ocean, bay, river and stream. Well, Vaughn has really outdone the hard-lure genre and soft as well, with his jointed and straight stick and swim lures. The lures are available in the following patterns: Brook Trout, Perch, Shiner, Shad, Tiger Trout, Pickerel, Northen Pike and Palomino. There are divers, square bill crankers and wobblers in big and littler bait sizes. His soft jointed and wire jointed are in large and small sizes as well.  These lures as stated on their brochure are “As real as it gets.”  www.chasingtrophyfish.com

Thoughts for a Country May Monday

My pond in TN. and our windmill
My pond in TN. and our windmill

APtravelnews-May 11th, Goose Holler’ Farm— Sitting and looking out from over my desk towards our 1-acre pond. Thoughts went back to yesterday. I was sitting next to the pond relaxing and I heard a rustling sound coming from a small bush on the otherside of the pond, when a fat mud turtle emerged, looked across the narrow edge of the pond and then quickly slid into the pond.

Each day a new tableau opens up to me, and I am just happy to take it all in whenever I am not locked to the puter!

Today, just moments ago a silvery shard, in the guise of a frisky largemouth bass jumped at some falling caterpillars falling from their silky tent-nest high in one of the trees that ring the pond. The sun caught the wet, white and silver bottom of the fish and I am now recording it on the puter, with only the ripples left of the memory of that delicious sight.

From the deer that come down to drink, to the kingfisher screeching across the pond in hopes of popping a bluegill too close to the surface for its own good, I marvel at the sights and take frequent breaks to just sit back, smile and watch the unfolding nature less than 100-feet away from my office window. Besides the 5-S’s, what else is more fulfilling on a country spring day? Thoughts for a fine Monday half-way through the month of May!
