www.americanpresstravelnews.com – July 3rd, Bob & Barb writing from home at our Goose Holler Farm/Ranch–This home was built in 1853 by Francis Smith Edwards. The property passes through several hands before it was sold to John A. Waterhouse in 1885. He transformed the home from a square Italian villa, into the current Queen Anne style by 1888. John Waterhouse’s wife took on a mortgage and opened the home as a Sanitarium, offering cures for those suffering from alcoholism, tobacco or drug addiction. They sold the home in 1898 to the Steam’s family. The Steams sold the home to the Fredonia Teachers College for student housing. It changed hands again until Jeff Peterson, and Maggie Bryan Peterson purchased the home approximately 14 years ago. They restored the home to it’s original beautiful condition turning it into an Inn. Jeffrey Peterson co-owner with Maggie Bryun Peterson said that “We didn’t so much take possession of the house, in a way, it took possession of us.” The house is really built-14-inches of solid brick, a turret room, porches all the way around most of the first floor, delightful sitting rooms and a library room, very large dining area and the rooms were commodious and well appointed in a modern touch that blended with the antiques and early furniture. The breakfast meals were amazing!

First of all, I/we love real coffee that tastes and smells like it. The Inn had it covered! All the morning dishes were tasty and exceptionally well conceived and prepared. Jeff Peterson is a perfectionist and it showed in everything he did. Turning down the beds, creating the meals with Maggie-we were mightily impressed. Nothing was taken for granted. We were in the town of Fredonia and the streets were laced with great stores and several restaurants. Our walk was punctuated by meeting a few of the locals who were all friendly and wanting to tell us tourists all about their lovely town, just up the road from Lake Erie! Chautauqua Institution – The Anthenaeum Hotel – A Beautiful Historic Place in New York State

www.americanpresstravelnews.com -June 29th. I had the opportunity to visit the Chautauqua Institution, in Chautauqua, New York prior to the beginning of their summer season.

Touring the beautiful Athenaeum Hotel was a real treat. The hotel was established in 1881. The constant renovations has kept up to the standards to the history and beauty of the past, while having the up-to-date comforts to enjoy on a day to day basis for today. I would have loved to have my wedding in such a historic place. The hotel and Institution are open during the summer months. In the spring and fall months, the Athenaeum Hotel acts as a host to well-organized conferences, beautiful weddings, and special events. The Institution is home to the entertainment programs offering many events such as concerts, a dance program by the Chautauqua Ballet Company, or a show by a special guest artists and so much that are a range of special courses in music, art, dance, drama and others. There are also scholarship programs offered. Presently the Amphitheater is in the process of a complete renovation and is re-opening within the next couple of weeks. It was at the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater, where Franklin Delano Roosevelt addressed a crowd of over 12,000 with his historic “I hate war” speech. The Institution has also been visited by a number of notable historical figures including Booker T. Washington, Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart ,Thurgood Marshall and many more notable people in America’s past and present. The Great Tree Inn – Mayville, N.Y. – A feeling that you have come home

www.americanpresstravelnews.com – June 24th. When we arrived at The Great Tree Inn, we were welcomed by Innkeepers Mark and Shelia. This Inn is a 1850’s farmhouse and barn on 10 acres, in a beautiful country setting. Very private, yet just a couple of minutes to the town of Mayville. After we settled in to our room, we toured the other rooms and found that they are all furnished attractively and have private bathrooms. If you like farm animals, this is your B&B. From horses to pigs, ducks and chickens {their fresh eggs fed us our omelettes) and all manner of critters in between, this is a real down to earth spot for you.

After settling in, we decided to explore Mayville. It is situated at the northwest end of Chautauqua Lake and is the closest town to the Chautauqua Institution. The steamboat, Chautauqua Bell was parked on the lake which still operates out of Mayville and runs between Point Chautauqua, the Chautauqua Institution and the vessel’s home port in Mayville.

Mark and Sheila have a large selection of magazines, anytime coffee pot with home made goodies (great cookies) and a very comfortable living room to relax any time of the day. We enjoyed sitting outside in the cool evening chatting with touring couples who biked all over the area.

In the morning, we both were able to enjoy Mark’s creative, very tasty breakfasts that gave us a great headstart for the day ahead. The portions are extra-large, and all left overs are recycled by his many animals. Since Bob was leaving at 6:00 in the morning to go fishing, Mark insisted that he could not leave the Inn without one of his terrific breakfasts. Roanoke’s Black Lantern Inn Bed & Breakfast Excellent & Friendly Place to Stay

Breakfast was a healthy treat. Coffee tasted like “real” coffee, the true organic breakfast fruit plate was delicious, brioche was special, the apple egg dish was superb (her moms and grandma’s old delicious recipe) all in all a memorable and socially wonder experience talking and getting to know each other.

No, not because these type of stop-overs are extremely rare, but finding just the right one may be if you go in “cold.” What we look for is personality, and real friendliness-people that like people. So when we were told by our hostess to the area in the guise of Convention and Visitors Bureau Media Specialist; Taylor Ricotta about this nice couple who recently purchased the Black Lantern Inn, who would enjoy inviting us to spend a couple of nights at their place while we worked on our VA. travel articles, we said “yes.”The Inn has 3-accommodation rooms. We were offered the entire 3rd floor called the “Skyline Room with en suite bathroom, king size bed, sofa, writing desk and a flat screen TV. Call for prices. Rooms are $125 and up to less that $200 per night which includes breakfast for two. Great impeccable baths, fabulous urban surroundings and chirping birds off the porches, make this a memorable and relaxing interlude for any traveler and visitor to Roanoke, VA. There is a large amount of history to be able to explore in Roanoke. We honed in on railroading. The Museum of Transportation is a worthy visit. Replete with dozens of retired trains and transportation equipment, children of all ages from 4-100 would love this easily accessible museum. The Black Lantern Inn is tops with us for a B&B.
