If You Live in “Open Water” States Such as Florida, Here are 5 Baits for Cold Water Fishing

An Alabama Guide shows a nice bass, not a monster, but any bass is a gudin!!!!

APtravelnews-Port St. Lucie, FL.–February 20th,— According to Kevin Van Dam,  a big winner at the Bass Masters Tournaments, the following Power techniques and baits will work all four seasons ..if you’re using the right baits—Jerkbait “This is my favorite choice for lakes that have clear water, says Van Dam! “Bass are focused on shad during the winter, and I prefer a suspending jerkbait for fishing around vertical structure, like main lake bluffs and bridges, this time of year. When the water is colder, the shad suspend in the water column and if I see shad dying and gulls diving on them, that tells me the suspending jerkbait is the best choice. I will snap it a few times and always experiment with the action until I know how they want it.

Red Eye Shad The lipless crankbait can be dynamite on cold, lowland reservoirs or natural lakes, especially if there is vegetation. It’s very efficient for covering a lot of water. However, I do slow the retrieve down and keep the bait in contact with the bottom.

Flat-sided crankbait There’s something about a flat-sided crankbait that neutral bass react to better in cold water than they do to rounded-body lures. My favorite is the Strike King KVD 1.5 Flat that has a long bill and no rattles. I love to fish this bait parallel on channel swings close to the bank in major creeks and even along bluffs, riprap and laydowns. I throw it on 10-pound line and it runs about 10 feet deep. It has a subtle action they can’t stand when the water is cold, so use a steady, slow-to-medium retrieve.

SwimbaitI really like the Strike King Shadalicious in either the 4 1/2- or 5-inch sizes, opting for the larger one in lakes with big bass and big shad. These baits are very efficient for covering deeper zones of lakes where bass hold off main lake structure. Also, hollow-body baits have a paddle tail that kicks and moves a lot of water, which is very important in stained water. And, like flat baits, they wobble seductively from side to side.

Blade baits and jigging spoons Blade baits are good for fishing edges of deeper flats. I cast and work it similar to the way I fish the Red Eye Shad, except the blade bait is more efficient in deeper water. Use a lift-and-drop retrieve, feeling the good vibration from the lure each time you lift. And remember: both blade baits and the Red Eye work best this time of year on heavier line because it slows the fall and reduces problems with it burying in the grass. The jigging spoon is a bait I primarily fish vertically. Our electronics are so good that, while graphing creek channels, you’ll see pods of bait and mark fish around them. With the spoon, you can fish through the bait. It’s even good along timber and doesn’t snag as much as you think. If it does, jiggle it and it shakes free.”

Note**Bottom line is;  Bassmaster anglers fish for a living and have far more experience going after largemouth bass than the average angler. So, we believe following some of these techniques will help you catch the “bigun!” Also, remember bass are fun to catch, but release them, crappie and perch are much better eating!!!

Brian Curry and Nicole Boulete, owners of the Corner Grill put in considerable work and efforts to cleanup to develop their new business! Food, cleanliness and decor was terrific!!!!

APtravelnews-Port St. Lucie, FL-February 18th,–Bob and Barb “Stopping to Smell the Roses” at The Corner Grill.  The Corner Grill  Restaurant, located in the Bridge Plaza just off Port St Lucie, Blvd.  1068 SE Port St Lucie to be exact, is owned and operated by Nicole Boulete and Brian Curry. This is no run-of-the-mill Grill! Serving breakfast and lunch, the Corner Grill puts out some mighty large and tasty meals. We first met the folks here when we stopped for breakfast last week. Barb said that she was very happy with her egg dish, and I agreed with my cheese omelet, that everything tasted fresh and there was no greasiness to anything. We decided to go back and have lunch today! We were very glad we did. Our positive suspicions were correct; this is no ordinary food emporium! What we ate: We started with Hidden Shrimp. Perfect shrimp covered en cruet by delicious melted mozzarella cheese that also covered a tasty addition of spinach. We left nothing over!! We tried a Mac and Cheese Burger, yep! Mac and cheese on top of a perfectly cooked to our liking, burger with perfectly done fresh grilled bacon strips-WOWSER!!! We also tried an impressive pork sandwich with three different cuts of pork, pickles, more bacon, served with a cucumber salad. So big was this delicious dish that we could only eat half of it (yep, doggy/people bag is in our fridge now for today’s lunch too)  although if my stomach was as big as my eyes it would all have gone down, right then!

Roomy and airy, decorated with all manner of marine and tropical metal fish and palm tree scenes, the place was very relaxing and our waitress was very nice and friendly- yes, we even left her a decent tip, for a change in exchange for great service! The Corner Grill is open now for two months and from Monday to Saturday from 7am–3pm and on Sunday from 7am to 2 pm. Ask about their special Friday breakfast which also includes coffee! Give a call 772-249-0087, although, just stopping in will always get you a table too! They serve dishes such as Poquine  (French Fries with a gravy and cheese curds, yes ate that too) and other French Canadian specialties!P1030296 P1030299

Global Warming, the Joke is On Us! I’m Still Going to Drive My Van!

Global warming due to "US" has not melted my Arctic landing pad!
Global warming due to “US” has not melted my Arctic landing pad!

APtravelnews-February 15th, The Arctic–40-below and the copter was still operating, but no, we didn’t shut the motor down. Sure, we may be in a warming cycle, the earth has been in and out of these cycles for untold millions of years. Why would anyone be so foolish as to think people are changing the worlds climate in any truly significant way? As a world traveler, for the past 52-years, I’ve seen and heard many things from many people, including some of the finest true Scientists in the world. But frankly, not a one of these “true” Scientists” that did not have a political agenda, ever espoused that the cause of the “big melt” was due to humanity! Yes, in various locales, and on a micro-climate basis there have been some changes and (very limited areas) but G-D and his, its, hers nature is still calling the shots! The only thing I can say is move over Florida, with this winter and the past couple, lots of folks up North Country way are going to be looking for a home in the sun!

Book Signings At Florida’s Morningside Library

My first book lover! She wantged my Africa and Goldie the Goldfish book!
My first book lover!
She wanted my Africa and Goldie the Goldfish book!

APtravelnews-Port St Lucie, FL.–Morningside Library--Barb and I were invited to Meet the Authors event today, Valentines Day! We meet new people, sell some books and network with others that have published or self-publish their books and we learn lots of interesting ways to continue succeeding in the “book game.”

Our “Africa On a Pin & a Prayer” and “The History of Fishing In the Florida Keys”  two of the three books we’ve had published in the past year were popular. My Africa book is actually a true-life adventure tale of my two years in Africa and the Congo, after leaving my Kibbutz life in Israel. There were several other authors at the event and we were able to meet and look at their interesting books, as well as picking up a book or, two ourselves!

Remember: “Every book is brand new until YOU read it!  Order a signed copy [email protected]
