My Best Friends with 4-Paws

American Press Travel News March 12, 2020–Bob and Barb “Stopping to Smell the Roses”,  and remembering his best friends.

My first dog pal was Shishkabob, she was alternately covered in bands of white and black fur. She reminded me of my favorite skewered dish of Shishkabob. I don’t have an image of her for this article, just pictures of her in my memory. I was in my last year of college, It was February, the coldest month in Vermont and it was snowing. I looked out my apartment window and saw this dog next to the front door of a Jewelry store in Brattleboro, VT. It was shivering. A patron opened the door and I saw it run in. Donning my coat, I went down the stairs, across the street and entered the store. The owner was shooing the near- frozen- dog out of the store, and the patrons smiled and looked on. I asked if this was anyone’s dog? No one responded, and so I scooped her up, took her home and she became my first, 4-paw, best friend.

Terry lived with me for 14-years. She really lit-up my life. Long gone now, I remember her funny, and sometimes delightful antics. My second dog was when living in the Florida Keys. It was a rainy New Years and Barb heard about a dog that was being held, but being mistreated by this family in Key Largo. The puppy-dog was 7-months old. He was being left in a closet in a plastic garbage bag with his muzzle taped, so when the owners who were tenants, and not allowed to have a dog, left their home, he couldn’t bark. I took him, after being extremely gruff with the people, cleared him of ticks and worms, and Charlie became my dock-dog. He too made it to 14-years. He was our traveling companion all over the USA as we traveled in our motorhome, fly fishing America!! My third dog also traveled with us around America. Terry, mixed up Terry, was our fabulous pal for about 14-years too! Terry saved me from a huge tree that fell in the exact spot I had been standing, one evening at our farm. He pulled so hard and whined that I walked away from repairing a solar fence light. The tree fell seconds after I was away from the fence. We buried Terry 2-years later after his kidneys failed, on our farm, with a carved granite head-stone made for me by a Cherokee Indian in Alabama. Dogs-just cannot live without them, and for me it was proven!!!!

Fishing Lake Chautauqua, New York

White bass a blast and good eating fish on light tackle.
Yellow perch are excellent food fare. They also put up a nice little battle on light tackle. If it moves, they will strike it!

AmericanPressTravelNews -Lake Erie, N.Y.-Bob and Barb “On The Road Again” catching up with some fish!

A relatively small walleye pike, but this lake has some big-un’s too!
Mike Sperry is more than a fishing guide. He also creates tackle that he sells for musky and all other gamefish.
White perch are prolific in most upstate New York.
Many different lures that target musky!
Guide and fishing entrepreneur Mike Sperry was a great fellow to fish with. He was quite attentive to his boat mates.

I fished with Dave Barus and Mike Sperry of Chautauqua Reel Outdoors Guide & Tackle, LLC. on Lake Chautauqua-we were looking to pop a musky, but we ended up catching a mixed bag of yellow perch, walleye pike, and silver perch and bass. It was a great day of chit chat, hook photo and release, and a fine waterfront lunch with Dave and his friend and guide-Mike Sperry. Mike has a great personality, loves fishing, makes and markets his own lures and is very attentive to his anglers. His shops number is (716) 763-2947 you can get live bait and buy all manner of freshwater lures including his tried and true lures as well!  His booking number for all freshwater species (crappie, perch, bass, walleye, musky and steelhead too, is: 716 969-4633 and he is a licensed fishing guide. www.chautauquareeloutdoors.com

AMERICAN PRESS TRAVEL NEWS – June 20 – Mineral Bluff, Ga. Bob and Barb on the road again and we’re stopping to smell the roses on the Toccoa River Trail & waters. We’re here at the Firefly Fishing Lodge enjoying the quiet the wildlife and the beautiful waters of both a famed rainbow trout creek and the Toccoa River. Owners, Bart & Nina Gilbert checked us into a nice historically built room with all amenities you’d want for a comfortable stay. The special place was loaded with antiques from a past whose provenance, that easily can be felt here. Bart told us to look out our windows early morning and evening to view the visiting wildlife. Bart’s favorite chore is to leave corn out for the wild turkey and the very wild deer, lots of them could be seen feeding during those early and late daytime hours. Coming up to the Firefly, was a father and son weekend for Fathers Day. Several teams would come together for fly fishing and socializing around the barbecuing fun. The Lodge offers guided flyfishing, and informative tours to local waterfalls, Georgia’s highest mountain, the longest swinging bridge, east of the Mississippi, native American Historical sites and “Train Tracks” their railroad themed tour plus so much more, just ask! We viewed several rare antiques at the main lodge such as  a square Grand Piano to name just one of many. The lodge offers several packages for world class fishing and family escapes for hiking, tubing, swimming, kayaking, and even old-time outdoor games. We did not experience a breakfast  or any meal at the lodge, according to Nina, it just doesn’t work for them now, but we are sure if ever offered, they would be first rate! Get in touch with Bart and Nina at: 706-374-4489 www.fireflyfishinglodge.com  and e-mail to fireflylodge@tds.net
